Designing a Dark Theme That Isn’t Just Black
“Dark mode” often just means inverting a light design and calling it done — black background, same layout, ship it. My Pocket’s theme went through several rounds specifically because that approach doesn’t hold up, and I wanted to write down what actually changed and why.
Pure black isn’t restful, it’s harsh
Near-black backgrounds create extreme contrast against white text and bright UI elements, which reads as high-tech at first glance but gets fatiguing fast, especially at night when you’re most likely to be checking your balance before bed. My Pocket’s background sits in a lighter charcoal-navy range instead — dark enough to feel like a proper dark theme, soft enough that your eyes don’t have to fight it.
Cards need to visibly float
In a light UI, a white card on a grey background reads instantly as “a surface.” In dark mode, if your card background is too close to your page background, everything blurs into one flat plane. The fix isn’t more contrast everywhere — it’s a deliberate lightness step between page background, card background, and elevated/hover states, so your eye can tell what’s “on top of” what without thinking about it.
Colour still needs a job to do
My Pocket’s emerald and teal aren’t decoration — green means money coming in or a settled balance, and the same gradient marks primary actions everywhere in the app, so it’s learned once and recognised everywhere after that. Dark mode makes this harder, not easier: saturated colour can look garish against a dark background if you’re not careful with opacity and where it’s used. Most of the colour in the interface is intentionally restrained to badges, icons, and accents rather than large fills.
It’s still evolving
The exact background tone has shifted more than once since launch, based on nothing more scientific than “this still looks a bit too dark, can we lighten it” — and that’s fine. A dark theme isn’t a one-time decision, it’s a setting you keep tuning as you actually live with it every day.
